WELL, WELL! BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE AT IT AGAIN
If you have a passion for your community and would like to contribute some of your time and energy to keeping our piece of paradise the special place that it is, please consider joining the LSE Beautification Committee. No dues and no official organizational structure. Just good people working together for the benefit of all who call LSE home. On January 10th there will be a meeting of the BC at the home of Marge Nehlsen at 12667 Suzy Avenue beginning at 7:00PM. All residents are welcome to attend and give their input for 2012 activities and improvements. If you want to help make a difference please come!
Just recently Tony Littell, Chuck Celeya, Kent Dotson, Tim Stump, and Jerry Ridings installed a well at Courtly Manor Park. Its purpose is to provide a water source for the newly planted oak trees and shrubs, especially during the dry season. The well head and pump are neatly contained in a bin. A water line runs the length of the entire park with a spigot at both ends. Our volunteers hand drove a 1.5 inch pipe 23 feet down. Special thanks to Jerry Ridings who made a significant contribution to offset the cost of materials.
Thanks to the Beautification Committee Courtly Manor Park now boasts access to both electric and water.
LAKE MAINTENANCE CORP. & LSPOA HOLD ANNUAL MEETINGS AND APPOINT NEW BOARDS
Lake Suzy Lake Maintenance Corporation held its annual meeting on April 19, 2011 at the Association of Realtors building in Port Charlotte.
The proposed budget was approved by the membership for the new fiscal year. The gathering said good-bye and thank you for the two departing board members, Kent Dotson and Betty Reinwald. In their place will be Joan Pilikian and Ned Reeves. We wish them well in their new positions.
The Lake Suzy Property Owners Association held its annual membership meeting on Thursday, May 12th at the Lutheran Church of the Cross. The proposed budget was unanimously approved. Outgoing Board members include Buck Million who served one term as President; Judy Thompson, ARC Chair and, John Martellini, ARC representative. Gift certificates were presented to the three for their fine service to the community
CHANGES TO LAKE SUZY 100 YEAR FLOOD PLAIN MAPS
On February 5th, 2011 the Southwest Water Management District (SWFWMD) presented its remapping of the Lake Suzy area to several interested residents. Using laser technology they recorded elevations of the landscape. The new maps replace the former ones that are fifty years old. They reveal the elevation above mean sea level of every piece of land and water in the Lake Suzy area. Most of our properties are at least 25' above sea level. The new maps give statistical projections of the high water levels in a hundred year event. This is defined as a rainfall of 9.7 inches in a 12/24 hour period.
These new maps have been approved by SWFWMD's board of directors and are ready to go before the DeSoto County Commissioners for review and approval. There will be additional opportunity for public comment at that time.
Bottomline: The representatives assured everyone that the new FEMA maps will show that the flood zone is at the high water mark on Lake Suzy. Thus, none of our homes are in the flood zone and we will not be required to pay for high cost flood insurance.
Thanks to the "Alliance" for organizing this well attended and informative meeting. For more information contact: Cece McKiernan of Environmental Consultants and Technology at 800-423-1476 et. 4338 or cmkiernan@ectinc.com or http://www.ectinc.com.
PARKER CORPORATION ABANDONS SONOMA PRESERVE DEVELOPMENT PLAN
On January 25, 2011 the DeSoto County Board of Commissioners voted to change the zoning of Sonoma Perserve which is the development adjacent to Kings Row in Lake Suzy Estates. The re-zoning was for the entire development (about 515 acres). The Planned Unit Development with Residential Multi-family 6 units per acre was re-zoned to Agricultural 10. This large development of 999 homes bordered King’s Row in Lake Suzy Estates. Although the Jack Parker Corp. continues to own the property, the County specified that the PUD would no longer be valid. If they plan to develop the property in the future, the zoning would have to be re-applied for and a new PUD plan approved.
The re-zoning is a financial blow to the County which will lose about $50,000 a year in property taxes.
The property will be used for grazing cattle. Cattle from the Parker property have presented a problem to local residents when they escape through the fence. The cattle have been rescued from the lake by neighbors; found on our streets and in our yards, as well as, wandering on Kings Highway. The DeSoto County Sherriff’s Office has a specific deputy who deals with animal problems in DeSoto County. You can report escaped cattle to the Sherriff’s office by calling a local number 743-6777. The owner of the cattle (Mr. Tom Lipe) can also be contacted at 863-990-0174.
In 2004, the original Sonoma Preserve PUD presented a danger to the property values of Lake Suzy Estates. That plan called for over 300 condos to be built adjacent to Kings Row. The backyards of the condos would face 20 homes on Kings Row in Lake Suzy Estates. For many reasons, the plan was detrimental to our property values and quality of living. LSPOA led the legal and political struggle to alter the plan. We were successful and the final plan replaced the condos with the Parker Model Single-family Homes along Kings Row. We will need to be watchful in the future for new development plans for that property. New development is inevitable, but it is important that the development be compatible to our beautiful Lake Suzy Estates homes.
