LSPOA HOLDS ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The Annual Membership Meeting of the Lake Suzy Property Owners Association was held on Saturday, April 28th at Kingsway Country Club. Dee Hannon, President, welcomed and addressed the attendees. She also introduced the Board, Committee Chairs, and new members.

Don Drinkwater presented the Financial Statement for the past year and he presented for approval the 2012-2013 LSPOA Budget. The major change in the budget affecting each member was a reduction in the annual membership dues from $250 per year to $225. This was possible due to a reduction in landscape maintenance costs. Beautification Committee volunteers will be doing the work previously done by LSPOA's landscape contractor. The Budget was unanimously approved.

Bob LaFlam retired from the Board after serving 4 years. Bob and his wife, Barbara, along with Tracey Littell, represent the new Welcoming Committee. Bob will also continue to serve as our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. By acclamation, Cindie Mattke was named as a new Board member.

The new Lake Suzy 2012-2013 Directory was distributed to all in attendance. Members not in attendance will also receive a copy. This much needed and appreciated phone directory was prepared through the painstaking efforts of Joanna Drinkwater. It includes an alphabetical list of residents, residents by street, important DeSoto County phone numbers, and an exclusive map of Lke Suzy.

The LSPOA Newsletter and Membership drive packets will be in the mail soon to all Lake Suzy Estates residents. It is the hope of the Board that everyone will seriously consider membership and help support our wonderful community.

LAKE MAINTENANCE CORP. HOLD ANNUAL MEETING

The Lake Suzy Lake Maintenance Corporation held its annual membership meeting on March 14th at the Grace Presbyterian Church. All current Board members were approved for re-election for one year terms (See below). The budget as presented was approved.

CHANGES TO LAKE SUZY 100 YEAR FLOOD PLAIN MAPS

On February 5th, 2011 the Southwest Water Management District (SWFWMD) presented its remapping of the Lake Suzy area to several interested residents. Using laser technology they recorded elevations of the landscape. The new maps replace the former ones that are fifty years old. They reveal the elevation above mean sea level of every piece of land and water in the Lake Suzy area. Most of our properties are at least 25' above sea level. The new maps give statistical projections of the high water levels in a hundred year event. This is defined as a rainfall of 9.7 inches in a 12/24 hour period.

These new maps have been approved by SWFWMD's board of directors and are ready to go before the DeSoto County Commissioners for review and approval. There will be additional opportunity for public comment at that time.

Bottomline: The representatives assured everyone that the new FEMA maps will show that the flood zone is at the high water mark on Lake Suzy. Thus, none of our homes are in the flood zone and we will not be required to pay for high cost flood insurance.

PARKER CORPORATION ABANDONS SONOMA PRESERVE DEVELOPMENT PLAN

On January 25, 2011 the DeSoto County Board of Commissioners voted to change the zoning of Sonoma Perserve which is the development adjacent to Kings Row in Lake Suzy Estates. The re-zoning was for the entire development (about 515 acres). The Planned Unit Development with Residential Multi-family 6 units per acre was re-zoned to Agricultural 10. This large development of 999 homes bordered King’s Row in Lake Suzy Estates. Although the Jack Parker Corp. continues to own the property, the County specified that the PUD would no longer be valid. If they plan to develop the property in the future, the zoning would have to be re-applied for and a new PUD plan approved.

The re-zoning is a financial blow to the County which will lose about $50,000 a year in property taxes.

The property will be used for grazing cattle. Cattle from the Parker property have presented a problem to local residents when they escape through the fence. The cattle have been rescued from the lake by neighbors; found on our streets and in our yards, as well as, wandering on Kings Highway. The DeSoto County Sherriff’s Office has a specific deputy who deals with animal problems in DeSoto County. You can report escaped cattle to the Sherriff’s office by calling a local number 743-6777. The owner of the cattle (Mr. Tom Lipe) can also be contacted at 863-990-0174.
