MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR - The Schindler's

Periodically during the year we will feature a Lake Suzy Estate resident or residents who make a difference in our community. This month the spotlight is on RoseMary and Rollie Schindler.

Ask Rollie or RoseMary Schindler what makes their hearts sing and you will hear “being around good people” and, the “joy of service” to the community. It’s people like the Schindler’s that makes living in Lake Suzy Estates special!

Rollie and RoseMary were born in Ohio. Both widowed, Rollie loves to tell the story of how they met. Although they lived on the same street and went to the same church, they did not know each other. One day RoseMary was having car trouble in her driveway and Rollie, while on his way home, stopped and offered to help. From that point on their friendship grew which included going to church together and enjoying each others company. Within six months they were married in May, 1988. The rest is, as they say, history.

In 1991 they decided to move to the warmth and sunshine of Florida in Punta Gorda where Rollie owned property. From there they moved to Pirate Harbor where they experienced “Charlie” in 2004. After the rebuilding process they sold their home while looking for a home away from the water. They found their new residence on David Drive in 2005.

Rollie and RoseMary have been active in the community since their arrival. Rollie, at 88 years young, has a passion for the outdoors and staying physically active, even though a recent hip problem has slowed him down a bit. You may have seen Rollie on his John Deere tractor as you traverse Courtly Manor. Rollie volunteers his time to mow the entire Courtly Manor Park as needed as well as the vacant lots across from it. All he asks is a thank you and gas money. His volunteerism saves LSPOA over $1000 a year. Rollie assumes “ownership” of the park and was amused one day when he noticed someone else mowing the Park. He approached the man only to learn he was speaking to another civic minded neighbor who was also looking “to help out” (the mystery man will be revealed in a future segment of ‘Meet your Neighbor’). Rollie politely let him know that this was his turf. So with a smile, this good neighbor loaded his tractor onto his trailer in search of another piece of public land in the community to offer his services.

Rollie has a passion for motorcycles (he has two in his garage) and was a member of the Blue Knights for several years. He served in the US Navy during WW2. He spent 20 years as a tool and die maker at GM and a private shop, and 25 years as a partner in a successful grocery chain in the Midwest. Rollie also has fond memories of his 12 years serving as a volunteer deputy sheriff in Montgomery County, Ohio.

RoseMary is a very artsy person with skill and interest in fashion design, painting and illustrations, crafts, knitting and sewing. Also, while attending Catholic school in Ohio with her twin sister, she so impressed the nuns with her penmanship, they encouraged her to pursue a study in calligraphy. She did so and our community has benefited from her talents by creating posters, signs and name tags of LSE veterans for special events.

‘Giving back to the community we love” is what we love to do says RoseMary. And whenever confronted with lifes many problems she asks herself, “what would Jesus do?” Good advice for all.

Thanks to Rollie and RoseMary for all that you do.
